No Sweetie, that is not your Daddy.

12 Apr

How do you explain to a 3 year-old that Daddy is not on every rig we see?  In the summer, we seem to go shopping at the same time as 3 of the area companies.  A few weeks ago, even shopping after school we ran into E38 at Woodman’s.  And EVERY time, O swears it is her Daddy coming to see her.

Today, there was a med call across the street.  Two squads, followed 20 minutes or so after by E38.  She SQUEALED in delight, “Mommmmmmmmy, Daddy’s home!” And here’s what she was so excited about…

Please excuse my nose/fingerprinted screen door!  Ewwww!

She saw the engine and the firefighters get off the rig and she just KNEW it was her Daddy!  She sat in front of that door, pitifully calling, “Daddy, Daaaaddddyyy, come herrrrree.”  I felt so bad, we went over and introduced ourselves so she could see that it was NOT Daddy.  They smiled and were gracious as we bothered them waiting patiently for the rest of their crew to wrap up inside.  We waved as they went off for their 30 second drive back to quarters.  And she was content.  Her Daddy did NOT blow her off.  Life was good again.

But, the funniest part of this whole situation, the FFs.  I would LOVE to have my husband at 38.  30 second drive to work, we could stop by and say hello with treats.  But one of the FFs quickly interjected after our introductions, “He needs to be glad he is downtown and NOT out here.”   Guess that is the difference between FFs and their wives.  He might be bored out here, but I would sleep so much more soundly!

Happy Monday!

Just a side note as to how small the MFD is, even with nearly 1,000 people among their ranks…  The firefighter whom I did not know , who told me my hubby should be glad he was NOT at 38, was on a med unit that stopped by J’s house last night to gas up.  We also stopped by at the same time to pick up some keys my FF needed to get dropped off to a former co-worker.  Very weird.  Can’t imagine what went through my FF’s head when he told him that he met his wife on Monday.  Good thing I told him about O’s response; it could have been a bit awkward.  The fire world is a small world indeed!  😀

I hope the sun is shining where you are, as brightly as it is into my classroom windows right now!  I just home we don’t end up in Oz with the winds we are expecting on our way home this afternoon.  Happy Friday!

There Was a Reason I Did Not Go Into Elementary Education

6 Apr

And it was science fair projects.  I never had to do one growing up.  I had to judge a Science Fair at J’s school one year.  But that was as close as I have actually come – until now.

My oldest came down last night at 8pm – “MOMMMMMM!!!  I forgot about my science fair project”  My stomach sank.  My FF had work the next day – which leaves it with me.  UGH!  I am a high school history teacher.  I am not made for this.  I don’t think like that.  DADDY was the elementary science teacher.  The experiment topic was at DADDY’S suggestion.  I have been bugging Daddy and his eldest to get this started.  I KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN!!!!  I knew there would be a Blue Shift blunder in here somewhere!!!  Ah well, such is life.  Develop a plan and move on, right?!  So, it began.

Last night, we hard boiled the eggs, brewed the coffee and soaked the eggs overnight.  That way we could answer the question that has been on all your minds – Which whitening toothpaste whitens coffee stained eggs the best?  I know it is profound, is it not?

So, here I sit, with my cell phone timer counting down the last 3 minute egg scrubbing – quietly cursing my husband.  Think he can sense it at Engine 2?  I hope so!

Tomorrow morning we’ll have to print out and glue on the  pictures when I get to work, hopefully we can get to school a BIT earlier, than usual.  Please wish us luck!

A Funk

2 Apr

No reason, nothing bad or inconvenient has happened (except for when I knocked my beloved Rosie the Riveter bookend off my desk yesterday, watching it shatter – in slow motion none-the-less –  into a million pieces in front of my desk – but my firefighter is a wiz with Super Glue & a Sharpie – made her good as new!) – just one of those days.  I think that is what today is.  Just one of those days.  I tried breakfast with my hubby before he left for work, but all that did was remind me he was going to work.  Tried a donut party with the Muppets, all that did was leave me with a ton of crumbs and a cute little video of my girls quietly bopping along to Under Pressure.  Should be enough to  bump me out of this funk, right?  Nope. So finally watching this week’s musical Grey’s Anatomy will do it, right?  Yeah, all that did was remind of how many hours, months I sat in front of that isolette in 2008.  <sigh>  Not even watching said baby flitter by in a nightgown and tutu has helped.  Ah well.  I am hoping a shower might help, but I have to find a way to quiet my crew and pray NOT to have 74 knocks at the door.  Maybe I should have skipped breakfast and taken the shower.

Oh yeah, and that stack of papers I have been neglecting just called my name…<sigh> Spring and sunshine need to come NOW!!!!  I am probably simply needing a dose of sunlight that is NOT coming through my classroom blinds, that I have to darken in order to see the whiteboard.   June 1st will be here before I know it.  J will not have EMT classes as he did in ’09 or the fire academy that swallowed our summer whole last year.  I might actually get to see him this summer.  There’s a novel concept.  Okay.  I am taking my crabby butt into the shower.  I think the idiot box might contain the muppets for a bit.  Maybe some steam to clear the head and hot water to get the juice flowing might fix this funk.

Happy Saturday? Maybe?
